four loko out, pony loco in

I’m not sure how apt this comparison really is, but the way people talked about the first party the Santos brothers & crew threw in Oakland as rotating dj’s Pony Loco reminded me of how, in high school, we would gossip during homeroom on Monday morning about that weekend’s escapades. There are parties and there are Parties and even though I wasn’t there, I’m willing to bet this was more like the latter. Basically, all the cool kids were there, but for a night they forgot how cool they were and danced like freaks & geeks.

This is very different from the last thing Danny & Gabe were working on (& the most linked-to post on this site,) “Sweet Jeans.” That turned out to be Moon Roof’s singular moment, more of an exquisite meteoroid than the launch of a band. This time around, I just can’t imagine this not being the foundation for something much larger. Musica tribal or guarachero or mexican dubstep or whateverrrrr you want to call it seems primed for a break out – I know that every time I play someone a Chico Sonido mix they ask for a pen and a piece of paper, and there  just aren’t that many people playing it. So, dear Santos Brothers: please keep this up, and if you do, we promise to keep promoting it.
